Finding a Niche Market - Breakthrough Techniques Revealed

Finding a niche market can be a daunting task but it is the
most crucial part of determining your success or failure in
niche marketing. What you want to do is find a hungry
niche. But how do you go about finding a niche market that
is hungry?

There are two types of hungry niches

- The first are niches nobody else has found yet.

- The second are niches with many interested people.

You can make money with either type of niche, but guess
which one wins most of the time?

Yep, the second one.

Most newbie internet marketers think they should find an
“untapped” niche and dominate it. In fact most gurus will
lead you to believe that this is exactly what you should do.
However, I have had much larger success tapping into the
sub-niches of very popular and highly competitive larger
niches than finding a niche market that is “untapped”. The
truth is the more people there are the more likely some of
them will find you.

Your first step in finding a niche market is to find good
keywords, but what makes a good keyword? A good keyword will
have two qualities:

- a decent amount of searches,

- and minimal competition

To help find these keywords I suggest using any of the free
keyword tools below:

keyword discovery

Simply enter any broad search term like ‘make money online’
for example and press enter. You should then be given a
list of 100 or more related search terms. You will probably
want to then focus on the long tail keywords or those
keywords that have three or more words in them.

In a separate window or tab go over to Google and enter one
of the search terms from the list into the search bar. Make
sure to put “quotes” around the keyword and then hit go.
The reason for using quotes is that this causes Googles
engine to only bring back results that have the exact phrase
you typed in. Now pay close attention to the upper right
hand corner of the screen. You will see something like
this:

The number that you see where the x’s are is what you want
to look at. If this number is less than 10,000 that is
awesome and we definitely want to keep this for future use.
You may want to consider making a separate list of keywords
that have slightly above 10,000 search results to add to
your niche annihilation later on. If you can come up with a
list of 20 - 50 good keywords then you have found yourself a
niche that you can promote to.

Finding a niche market may seem like a lot of work and it
can be at times, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
Keep in mind it is almost always easier finding a niche
market that is a branch off of a much larger already popular
niche.

You can promote your merchant’s product better if you know a lot of things about it. To become an expert, the best thing you can do is purchase your merchant’s product yourself. This way, you can tell your customers about your first-hand experience using the product. You can even write a testimonial or a personal endorsement ad about it. But if any condition does not permit you to purchase the product, you can at least make a thorough research about it.

* Host your own website.

Or at least have a domain name that is short and easy to remember. You certainly wouldn’t expect a visitor to remember a very long and incomprehensible URL. And if that’s so, you also wouldn’t expect him to visit your website any time soon. That means less traffic for your page and the less chance for your affiliate ads and links to be clicked.

If you use to ignore them before, then it is time for you to start focusing your attention on them. You can start your own chat or join an existing chat related to your product. You don’t have to promote your affiliate product at once, but find the chance to advertise and promote it as you go along. The same would be true for message boards, discussion boards and forums.

* Create a free ezine or newsletter.

Ezines and newsletters are periodical publications whose aim is to inform a group of people about a certain subject. In your ezines and newsletters, you don’t always have to promote your merchant’s product for this may greatly annoy your subscribers. Rather, find a way to insert your affiliate ads and links on some portions of the letter. Also, don’t forget to promote your ezine or newsletter on your website.

These are but a few guidelines on how you can increase your affiliate sales and continually grow your affiliate checks. Sure there can be a lot of other tips that out there, and if you think they would work, we won’t discourage you from following them. What’s important is that you be able to find a way to: attract more traffic to your site, induce your visitors to click on the ads on your site, and be able to promote your merchant’s products even outside the boundary of your website. My fashion background is as the VP of Operations for a
handbag production and marketing company. My
responsibilities include the inception and monitoring of
marketing programs for independent designers who may have a
few seasons under their belts, have some solid and sellable
designs, and who actually have funding.

While working with these clients, we have noticed that it
doesn’t matter how cushy the funding, every independent
designer that we work with initially wants to market their
designs to everyone under the sun…regardless of who really
would benefit from their particular designs. They have this
overwhelming desire to cast a net over as many customers
they can find.

When I ask them to describe their target customer, most of
our clients will nearly invariably say something along the
lines of, “I’m focusing on women between the ages of 14 and
65 who make any amount of money and who like the look of a
high-fashion bag.” Keep in mind also that the handbag
designs we usually manufacture are in the better-to-high-end
echelon, sold at Nordstrom’s or Nieman’s (and the like) with
an MSRP of around %400 or more. But for some reason, some
designers are convinced that their handbag is right for
every woman.

Say, for example, that in order to entice people to your
shopping cart website, you send out a postcard. Let’s also
say that you rent a mailing list of all the women that fall
into the three qualification categories I listed above. Can
you imagine how big that list could be? And what about the
printing and postage costs involved in sending a postcard
out to such a large list?

A rule of thumb in marketing plans for an
advertising/marketing budget is 10 percent of gross sales.
So how much would it cost to send out a postcard to roughly
50 percent of the population of the United States? If
following your marketing plan means that you can’t spend
more than 10 percent of gross sales, how many bags would a
designer have to sell in order to meet profit goals? What
number represents 10 percent of YOUR sales? And there is a
distinct likelihood that the majority of the list will just
trash the postcard because what you’re selling doesn’t
interest that recipient. What a huge waste of money and
resources!

This is why email marketing is just the thing for
independent fashion designers of all stripes. For just a
fraction of a traditional direct-mail campaign, you can send
out an email to hundreds, even thousands of people. Even
better is that most email marketing providers provide
reporting that shows you exactly who opened your email, what
links they clicked, whether their email “bounced” (proved to
be a “dead” email), and even how many times they visited
your main site. Still better is that you could conceivably
send out a “combo target email” with several different links
to dedicated web pages for different products, and you can
discover who clicked on which link. You could “segment” your
list in this way and send each person an offer that they’d
be more likely to take based on their purchasing habits.
Cool, right?

However, marketing to a niche makes much better sense in the
long run, and incidentally, your niche is not what YOU do,
but rather, who you’re targeting with your product. The
problem with many handbag designers, and many fashion
designers in general, is that they often say, “my niche is
designing couture-quality, fashion-forward handbags for
today’s woman.” This kind of statement completely ignores
what is really important: how like-minded people congregate
and not just demographics alone.

Obviously you want people to be able to afford your goods.
But you will make the most money from people who are “into”
something you offer. You want those groups of highly
selective handbag buyers, for example, who when they see
each other carrying that special, exclusive handbag, scream
excitedly, “ohmigodyou’reintogrysontoo!!!” Or something
similar. Have you ever seen anybody get crazy like that over
a Coach bag? Not that Coach is a bad bag, but they’re
everywhere now!

My particular “handbag addiction” is the Francesco Biasia
line. Every time I see someone else carry a Biasia, I get
excited and rush over with an excited “oh my god” to compare
bags.

It’s this interaction, this instant bonding moment, upon
which you want to capitalize. But how do you know you’ve
stumbled across the right niche? They should have three
basic characteristics:

* First, they’re lacking something that you can fulfill

* Second, you can find them

* Third, there are enough of them to meet your needs

The best tool I know of to capitalize on a niche is a
pay-per-click/search engine optimization campaign. These
techniques will actually drive the right traffic to your
website. I’ll write more about that “oh my god” effect, or
psychographics, and how to reach them using these internet
