Choosing a great biz domain name for your website is an important task. There are some common domain name mistakes that you need to consider when selecting a name. This process is essential, no matter how long it takes. It is difficult to change a domain name so get it right the first time.

Your biz domain name has many purposes. You want it to be congruent with your brand. You want a name that you can get to the top of the search engine results. And you want to generate maximum web traffic.

Try to create a long list of potential biz domain names. Brainstorm with other people and get input from as many sources as possible. Now use GoDaddy to see which domain names on your list are already taken. This part can be frustrating because many of your top domain names will already be taken. Short and common names are especially difficult to find.

Go through your list of available biz domain names, and see which ones contain the following 5 common domain name mistakes. Eliminate them from your list.

1. A domain name that is hard to spell or pronounce. When you verbally give your domain name to someone they should be able to spell it correctly without any ambiguity. It should also be easy to remember.

2. Not registering variations of the domain name such as plural and hyphenated versions. If you don’t, your competitors will and they will steal some of your traffic. Domain names are inexpensive, don’t skimp here!

3. Not getting a .com extension. Don’t settle for .net, .info, .ws, .bz, etc. If the .com version is not available, pick a different biz domain name.

4. Choosing a domain that doesn’t contain your main key term. This gets into search engine optimization. Basically, you’ll get a higher relevance score if your main key term is in your domain name. This is important because higher relevance means more natural traffic from the search engines.

5. Not owning your name. In addition to any other domain names you purchase, make sure to get your name in the form FirstLast.com. Even if you don’t need it right away, it’s better to get it before someone else does.

Selecting your biz domain name may seem like a trivial task but it is very important to register a great name. It is a huge hassle to change it later, so the time you spend choosing the right domain name is time well spent.

Bonus Tip: After getting your business domain name, you’ll want to generate highly targeted traffic to your new website.
