Online Writing: How To Fail In 5 Easy Steps

Online writing is a specific skill, and quite distinct from offline texts such as essays and formal letters. Here are five killer mistakes that writers new to the Internet make time and time again. Make sure you are not one of them!

The number one error of judgement is thinking a computer screen is as easy to read from as a piece of paper. The truth is it’s really hard work for your visitor’s eyes. Long paragraphs that run on for 10 or more lines are so common. How many visitors click away from your site because of this?

Secondly, not having enough white space between these paragraphs is a guaranteed turn off for any visitor. You need to space your text out to help people scan the webpage. Rid yourself of the illusion that everyone will pore over your text from start to finish. Many visitors scan webpages to see if the content matches what they are searching for.

Thirdly – and this is surprisingly common – too many web writers fail to enhance their text with images and other features that break up the writing. The Internet encourages us to have short attention spans, and the average website visitor will click away from your site if you don’t take this into account.

Number four is color overkill. Teenagers are dreadful culprits here, as any teacher or parent who has been treated to an adolescent PowerPoint presentation. You need sunglasses to cope with the violet clashes of red and turquoise assaulting your eyes!

A low key look and feel means that when you do use color it will stand out, and in a good way!

The final and perhaps most stupid mistake is failing to learn from others. Look at your favorite informational sites. What is it that makes the writing effective? Why is the text easy to read? Now go ahead and borrow these techniques (without copying the text of course).
