Top 7 Blogging Mistakes

Blogging is by far one of my favorite online marketing activities for online success. It’s a great way for me to share the tons of information I’ve learned about online marketing.

Blogging is not hard, but there are some basic mistakes that are easy to make.

At a minimum, you should try to avoid these 7 common blogging mistakes:

Mistake #1: Not making your articles attractive to the eye. Make sure you have a good color scheme, your font is readable, and your blog has a nice clean layout.

Mistake #2: Not writing using short sentences and short paragraphs. Unlike novels and other writing, you want short paragraphs. Use language that your target audience can understand. Don’t try to impress them with big words if it isn’t appropriate.

Paragraphs should only be 2-3 sentences long, which may require you to have paragraph breaks at non-standard locations. This will make your blog easier on your readers. Big chunks of text are not easy to read online.

Mistake #3: Not writing in a conversational style. You should pretend you are writing to one person, and one person only, your ideal reader. Write as if you are talking to them one-on-one. Don’t be afraid to express your opinions too.

Mistake #4: Not spell checking your articles before publishing them. Misspelled words are annoying to many people and will make you seem careless and uneducated.

Mistake #5: Only writing for search engines, not for your human visitors. If you use search engine optimization to get natural traffic from the search engines, make sure your article still reads well for your ultimate customer, your human visitors. It’s your human visitors that will buy from you, not the search engines! Only use keywords if they are appropriate and don’t negatively impact the readability of your article.

Mistake #6: Writing about topics just to make money, not because you are interested or passionate about the topic. If you have genuine passion on a topic, it will come through it your writing and it will be obvious to your readers.

Mistake #7: Not getting your readers engaged in the conversation. You don’t want a one-way dialog with your visitors. Encourage them to leave comments and share their thoughts, opinions, and knowledge. Directly ask them to interact and participate.

There are many other potential blog mistakes you can make, but focus on avoiding these 7 and you will have a blog that rocks!
