3 Internet Marketing Terms That You Need To Know About

internet marketing is constantly evolving.  Strategies that worked five years ago may now be obsolete.  But don’t see this as a bad thing.  Change is always good because it presents opportunities for those who can quickly adjust (and most people just can’t).  To be a player in today’s internet marketing world, it helps to be familiar with a few terms associated with current successful marketing techniques.

1.  Long tail keyword phrase.  The goal of many marketers is to rank on the first page of Google for the main keyword connected with the niche they are targeting.  The problem is that usually the main keywords have millions of competitors, so unless you have deep pockets or are a genius at search engine optimization, chances are you’ll never rank high enough to get much traffic from it.  Long tail keyword phrases are the low hanging fruit that you should be targeting.  Although there is much less demand for long tail keyword phrases, there’s also a fraction of the competition.  This means that it will be much easier to rank well, and thus get traffic.  By focusing on several long tail keyword phrases within the same niche, you’ll be able to get a substantial amount of organic visitors from the search engines.

2.  Competing webpages.  Although this is a very vague term, recently it has come to be connected with the amount of competition to be found in Google’s search engine results.  By placing your keywords inside of quotation marks in the Google search box, you will be given the amount of webpages that have the exact keyword phrase on them.  This is your true competition.  The lower the amount of competing webpages, the easier it will be to dominate that keyword phrase.  As a rule, many internet marketers will not target keywords that have greater than 10,000 competing webpages.  Some won’t target anything over 100 competing pages (because of the relative ease to rank high).

3.  Backlink juice.  In the past, all a marketer had to worry about was the keyword density of the webpage he was promoting.  If your page or site had a higher keyword density, then it would rank high in the search engines for that keyword.  But those days are long gone.  Today, backlink “juice” is incredibly important.  Backlinks are simply the links going to your website from other sites.  The more backlinks or “juice” that it has, the higher the likelihood of it ranking well.  To fully maximize the power of backlink juice, make sure that the backlinks are relevant to your site.  So if you are promoting a dog training blog, it would really help to have backlinks from popular dog training forums, blogs, and authority sites pointing to it.

People who succeed at internet marketing are those that can not only see the changes that are occurring, but who can also adapt and exploit them.  By understanding the importance of long tail keyword phrases, competing webpages, and backlink juice, you are ahead of the curve when it comes to profiting in today’s internet marketing.
